Scavenger assemblages are structured by complex competition and facilitation processes among vultures

چکیده

Understanding the factors that allow multiple species to coexist and share resources is an outstanding question in community ecology. Animals tend use different strategies decrease potential competition, through morphological adaptations, establishment of hierarchies, behavioral adaptations or spatial temporal segregation. The main objective this study was infer interspecific processes competition facilitation co-occurrence patterns a vertebrate scavenger guild de Brazilian cerrado. We analyzed between pairs, both qualitatively quantitatively, determined activity species. For purpose, we placed monitored 11 large (i.e. goat) 45 small chicken) carcasses by camera-trapping, obtaining total 27 448 images. Our results show complex competitive facilitative relationships among scavenging cerrado are influenced carcass size change depending on scale at which they analyzed. assemblages consumed were different, evidencing resource partitioning obligate facultative scavengers. Furthermore, as alternative reduce levels, most showed differences their patterns, addition strong segregation during consumption. Regarding New World vultures, our suggest interference with clear ecological traits (e.g. size, social behavior). However, also found evidence vulture location access interior carcasses. findings highlight role scavengers community. Future research should focus investigating play important structure dynamics community, considering intraspecific patterns.

RNA assemblages orchestrate complex cellular processes

Eukaryotic mRNAs are monocistronic, and therefore mechanisms exist that coordinate the synthesis of multiprotein complexes in order to obtain proper stoichiometry at the appropriate intracellular locations. RNA-binding proteins containing low-complexity sequences are prone to generate liquid droplets via liquid-liquid phase separation, and in this way create cytoplasmic assemblages of functiona...

Facilitation as Attenuating of Environmental Stress among Structured Microbial Populations

There is currently an intense debate in microbial societies on whether evolution in complex communities is driven by competition or cooperation. Since Darwin, competition for scarce food resources has been considered the main ecological interaction shaping population dynamics and community structure both in vivo and in vitro. However, facilitation may be widespread across several animal and pla...

African Vultures Don’t Follow Migratory Herds: Scavenger Habitat Use Is Not Mediated by Prey Abundance

The ongoing global decline in vulture populations raises major conservation concerns, but little is known about the factors that mediate scavenger habitat use, in particular the importance of abundance of live prey versus prey mortality. We test this using data from the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in East Africa. The two hypotheses that prey abundance or prey mortality are the main drivers of vult...

Environmental stress, facilitation, competition, and coexistence.

The major theories regarding the combined influence of the environment and species interactions on population and community dynamics appear to conflict. Stress/ disturbance gradient models of community organization, such as the stress gradient hypothesis, emphasize a diminished role for competition in harsh environments whereas modern coexistence theory does not. Confusion about the role of spe...
